One of the more useful ways to extend HTML is with microformats — small chunks of semantic markup for address book info, event listings and machine-readable metadata. In HTML 4, this is done using the class, rel, rev and profile attributes, along with some established design patterns and nested tags.

It is possible to continue using Microformats, with a few exceptions in HTML5.
Rich snippets and structured markup
Google tries to present users with the most useful and informative search results. The more information a search result snippet can provide, the easier it is for users to decide whether that page is relevant to their search. With rich snippets, webmasters with sites containing structured content—for example, review sites or business listings—can label their content to make it clear that each labeled piece of text represents a certain type of data: for example, a restaurant name, an address, or a rating. This information doesn't affect the appearance of your content on your own pages, but it does help Google better understand and present information from your page. For example, it can be used to create rich snippets to be displayed on a search results page. The image below displays a rating and price range—very useful to anyone searching for information about a restaurant.
Since it wasn’t designed with the HTML Design Principles in mind, it should come as no surprise that RDFa violates several of them, and so isn’t suitable for inclusion in the Web platform. As Ian put it in his WaSP interview: We considered RDFa long and hard[…], but at the end of the day, while some people really like it, I don’t think it strikes the right balance between power and ease of authoring. For example, it uses namespaces and prefixes, which by and large confuse authors to no end.
Note: This article describes an experimental format. Depending on feedback and on other available markup standards, it may be modified or replaced in the future. In addition, the rich snippets testing tool doesn't currently display previews of breadcrumb content. (But we're working on it.)

The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph. For instance, this is used on Facebook to enable any web page to have the same functionality as a Facebook Page.
The techniques explained in this tutorial are fully supported by Google and Yahoo, and can boost your video’s visibility in their search results!
